I’ve visited a LOT of places in Australia in the cumulative 7 years I’ve lived in this country, but one that had eluded me up until late 2020 is the very-popular (particularly among snow sport enthusiasts) Kosciuszko National Park.
When most people (myself included, until recently) think of Kosciuszko National Park, they picture mountains (and maybe snow). It is Australia’s premier alpine destination, after all.
But in reality, Kozzie is absolutely MASSIVE.
Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve associated hammocks with camping. The campsite just isn’t complete without a hammock hanging in the trees, as far as I’m concerned!
In my adult years, I’ve owned a hammock that sadly hasn’t seen much use… mostly because I spent my 20’s living in a concrete jungle (though I did hang it in Hudson River Park a few times…), but also because that hammock was kind of a pain to hang up.

Often when I’m road tripping, it’s all about what I’m seeing and doing and less about where I’m resting my head at night. Just give me a flat patch of grass or dirt in a somewhat quiet spot, ya know?
Being both an avid solo traveler and frugal by nature (and until recently, absolutely petrified of driving on the left side of the road), I’m constantly searching for adventures that can be had without having to drive anywhere.
I originally came across Bouddi National Park on the Central Coast of New South Wales in my perpetual quest to find awesome outdoor adventures that are accessible without a car. Someday I’ll get comfortable driving in Australia… and some year I’ll be able to afford a car.
There wasn’t any deliberation process when I decided to respond to a post on the Melbourne Backpacker facebook group offering a place on a roadtrip and camping adventure to Wilsons Promontory.
It took just a few hours of pacing around Airlie Beach before I decided: I have to get out of here.
Don’t get me wrong, you could do far worse than a town blessed with an endless summer.
